Amarapura

11 kilometres from Mandalay founded by Bodawpaya in 1783 Amarapura was only briefly the capital. It was moved back to Ava in 1823 and then back to Amarapura again in 1841. By 1857 King Mindon decided Mandalay should be the capital so Amarapura was left for the last time by a monarch. Today Amarapura is known for its beautiful silk and cotton weaving. If you roam through the streets past the wooden buildings you can hear the sound of women using their looms. At the southern part of the city lies the longest wooden bridge in the world, the U Bein Bridge. During the dry season the bridge crosses dry ground. U Bein was the mayor at that time of the shift from Ava and he salvaged material from the deserted Ava palace to build this 1 km long foot bridge. Sunset at the bridge or from the boat on the lake is a must see and often a great photo opportunity.
