Bamaw

Bamaw is located south of Myitkyina, the northern most town by boat streaming up the river.
It has long been a trading post and is the closest and most accessible point to China. Taking a boat up the river opens up beautiful vistas of typical village along the way. The second defile (gorge) is a spectacular sight, especially the so called "Angel-Face Cliff" because of it smooth and perpendicular cliff on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy river. The trip up stream is approximately 36 hours and downstream is a little faster, approximately 24 hours. Bamaw has been a gateway and a trading post for merchants doing business with China and it still retains memory as local indigenous people gather at the market to sell their waves.
