Sagaing

Sagaing became the capital of an independent Shan Kingdom in about 1315.Its glory days were short lived for the founder's grandson moved the capital to Ava in 1364. There are an abundance of pagodas scattered over Sagaing Hill on the west bank of the Ayeyarwady which provides great photo opportunities from across the river. People from all over Myanmar who want to have a tranquil existence go to Sagaing monasteries and nunneries to meditate. Best known of the Sagaing pagodas is the huge structure ten kilometres beyond the town of Sagaing. The enormous dome rises 46 metres in the shape of a perfect hemisphere although legend says that it represents the perfect breast of a well-endowed Burmese queen. Sagaing is also known for its art work, terracotta pots and beautiful silverware. Nearby the village of Ywataung you can see silver workers producing bowls and other silver items by traditional methods.
